Willesden Removals Health and Safety Policy
Willesden Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and related services. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with domestic and commercial moves, packing, loading, transportation and unloading of goods.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, and damage to property or the environment arising from our activities. We will identify, assess and control risks connected with lifting and carrying, use of vehicles, handling of customer belongings, working in and around buildings and operating in varied locations and access conditions.
Health and safety is an integral part of our operations and business planning. Management at all levels is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented and maintained, and every employee is required to cooperate and take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others.
Legal and Regulatory Compliance
Willesden Removals will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and regulations relevant to moving and transport services. We will monitor changes in legal requirements and recognised industry best practice and update our procedures, training and documentation as necessary.
Roles, Responsibilities and Cooperation
Senior management has overall responsibility for ensuring that adequate resources, information, training and supervision are provided to implement this policy effectively. Managers and supervisors are responsible for day-to-day health and safety management within their teams and for ensuring that safe systems of work are followed.
Employees must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards or incidents promptly and cooperate with any investigations or improvement actions. We also expect subcontractors, agency staff and any third parties working with us to adhere to our safety standards and procedures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will conduct risk assessments covering typical removal tasks such as packing, disassembly and reassembly of furniture, handling heavy or awkward items, stair and corridor movements, vehicle loading, unloading and driving, and work at customer premises. Site-specific risks will be identified prior to and during each job, and appropriate control measures will be put in place.
Safe systems of work will be developed, communicated and periodically reviewed. These include guidance on manual handling techniques, maximum load limits, use of trolleys and lifting equipment, team lifting procedures, securing loads in vehicles, safe parking and reversing, and managing restricted or shared access.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of removal operations and is a significant area of risk. All staff engaged in lifting and carrying will receive training in safe manual handling, including posture, assessment of load and route, use of assistance, and recognition of personal limits. No employee is expected to lift or carry items that present an unacceptable risk to their health or safety.
Where appropriate, handling aids will be provided, such as sack trucks, dollies, lifting straps and ramps. These must be used as instructed and inspected regularly to ensure they remain in safe condition. Defective equipment must be taken out of service immediately and reported to management.
Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety
Our vehicles will be maintained in a roadworthy condition, with regular inspections, servicing and necessary repairs carried out by competent persons. Drivers must hold the correct licence for the vehicles they operate and comply with road traffic laws, company driving policies and any route or time restrictions associated with specific jobs.
Loads must be packed and secured to prevent movement during transit. Drivers are responsible for conducting basic pre-use checks, reporting defects and ensuring that vehicles are safe before departure. Journey planning will consider realistic schedules, rest breaks and expected traffic conditions in our service areas.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Our work is often carried out at private homes, offices, storage facilities and shared spaces. We will take reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors and the public from risks arising from our activities, including controlling access to work areas, managing trip hazards such as boxes and equipment, and using warning signs or barriers where necessary.
Team leaders will assess access routes, stairs, lifts and parking arrangements on arrival and adjust the plan of work to minimise risk. Particular care will be taken when moving large or bulky items in confined spaces and when working near traffic or shared entrances.
Training, Information and Supervision
All employees will receive induction training covering our health and safety policy, emergency procedures, accident reporting and specific risks associated with removal work. Ongoing training will be provided on manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle safety and any specialised tasks relevant to their role.
Supervision levels will be appropriate to the experience and competence of staff and the complexity of the job. New or less experienced workers will be closely supervised until they have demonstrated that they can work safely and consistently follow procedures.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Miss Reporting
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported as soon as possible to the responsible manager or supervisor. We will investigate the underlying causes, identify any necessary corrective actions and share relevant lessons with the team.
Where required by law, incidents will be reported to the appropriate authorities. Records of accidents, training and risk assessments will be maintained and reviewed regularly to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Emergency Preparedness
Emergency procedures will be in place for foreseeable situations, including injuries, fire, vehicle breakdowns, road traffic collisions and unsafe conditions at customer premises. Staff will be briefed on what to do in an emergency, including how to raise the alarm, make the area safe where possible and contact the appropriate services.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We will monitor our health and safety performance through inspections, audits, feedback from staff and customers, and analysis of incident data. This policy and associated procedures will be reviewed at least annually, and whenever there are significant changes to our activities, fleet, equipment or legal requirements.
Willesden Removals is committed to continual improvement in health and safety. We encourage all employees to contribute ideas for safer ways of working and to challenge unsafe practices. By working together, we aim to provide reliable removal services while maintaining the highest practical standards of safety and care.
